The owner had initially launched the business as a dog walking business and then in 2021 expanded to include a physical location in a busy urban location to offer doggy day care and boarding. She was looking to move out of Massachusetts and make a life change and contacted BayState Business Brokers to help her sell her business, knowing they had expertise in pet care-related businesses.
BayState Business Brokers’ Approach
BayState Business Brokers has many years of experience selling animal daycare and boarding facilities, and broker Jake Levy prepared to take this urban doggy day care to market targeting individual and industry buyers. The listing generated lots of interest with many prospective buyers requesting more information and touring the facility.
As parties expressed their interest in the business there was a common concern as well. Jake advised the seller to put a manager in place for the business since prospective buyers were concerned about demands on the new owner to be on call nights and weekends in absence of a manager.
The seller was receptive to this idea and while the business was being marketed, promoted an existing employee to General Manager of the business.
The ultimate buyers were a father and son team. The son would be the owner/operator of the business, since it was his first foray into entrepreneurship. Being a cash deal, the process to close moved along smoothly as Levy set up weekly meetings between the seller and buyers to facilitate an efficient process. These meetings proved beneficial to both parties, especially as closing approached and both parties had more questions for Jake to facilitate. Prior to the sale, the newly promoted manager decided to move out of the area. Jake helped the seller focus on the importance of having this position filled to keep the deal moving and that potential hurdle was addressed prior to close.
Results
The due diligence process was straightforward, with the seller securing requisite vendor agreements and completing physical inventory counts. The seller was especially helpful in sharing information in advance to help get the new owner up to speed quickly.
The seller was thrilled to have a dog lover take over the business she had built so she could launch a new phase in her life. The new owner was excited to be an entrepreneur, running this successful doggy day care in a bustling part of Boston.
